About NeuroStar TMS Therapy

NeuroStar is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy that is used to target key areas of the brain that are underactive in people with depression. It is not ECT (electroconvulsive therapy).

While the exact cause of depression is not known, the leading scientific theory is that it is caused by an imbalance of the brain’s neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers that send signals between brain cells.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is NeuroStar TMS therapy?

NeuroStar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, non-medication treatment for depression and certain other mental health conditions. TMS uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation.

At Baker Direct Primary Care in Liberty Lake, we use the NeuroStar TMS system to provide personalized treatment for patients from Liberty Lake, Spokane Valley, Spokane, Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene, and surrounding communities seeking additional options beyond traditional medications.

How does TMS therapy work?

NeuroStar TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. These areas can become underactive in patients struggling with depression and certain other mental health conditions.

Treatment is performed while patients are awake and comfortably seated. No anesthesia or sedation is required.

What conditions can NeuroStar TMS treat?

NeuroStar TMS is FDA-cleared for the treatment of:

• Major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults
• Anxious depression
• Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in adults
• Adolescents age 15 and older with major depressive disorder

TMS is often considered for patients who:

• Have not responded adequately to antidepressant medications
• Experienced medication side effects
• Prefer a non-medication treatment option
• Are seeking additional treatment approaches for depression or OCD

At Baker Direct Primary Care in Liberty Lake, we provide personalized NeuroStar TMS evaluations for patients throughout the Spokane area and nearby North Idaho communities.

Is TMS therapy included in my DPC membership?

No. NeuroStar TMS treatment is separate from Baker Direct Primary Care membership services.

TMS therapy involves specialized equipment, treatment planning, and a dedicated treatment schedule that are not included in the monthly DPC membership fee.

Patients do not need to be DPC members to pursue TMS treatment at our clinic.

Do you accept insurance for TMS therapy?

Historically, Baker Direct Primary Care has offered NeuroStar TMS as a cash-pay service without direct insurance billing. This approach has allowed us to maintain flexibility in treatment planning and simplify access to care.

We are now beginning to work with some patients and insurance companies through single case agreements when appropriate. However, our primary focus remains providing accessible and flexible cash-pay treatment options.

Coverage and eligibility vary significantly by insurance plan.

What is a single case agreement for TMS therapy?

A single case agreement is a special arrangement in which an insurance company agrees to work directly with an out-of-network provider for a specific patient’s care.

In some situations, we may be able to help patients pursue a single case agreement for NeuroStar TMS therapy depending on medical necessity, prior treatment history, and insurance requirements.

Approval is not guaranteed and varies by insurer.

What does TMS treatment feel like?

Most patients describe NeuroStar TMS treatment as a tapping sensation on the scalp during treatment sessions.

Treatments are performed while the patient is awake and seated comfortably in a treatment chair. No anesthesia or sedation is required, and patients can typically return to normal daily activities immediately afterward.

How long does TMS treatment take?

Most NeuroStar TMS sessions take approximately 20 minutes, though treatment schedules may vary depending on the protocol being used.

Treatment is typically performed five days per week over several weeks, followed by a tapering phase when appropriate.

At Baker Direct Primary Care, we value flexibility and individualized treatment planning whenever clinically appropriate. We also offer maintenance treatment packages for select patients who may benefit from ongoing therapy after completing an initial treatment course.

Is TMS therapy safe?

TMS therapy is generally considered safe and well tolerated. NeuroStar TMS is FDA-cleared and has been studied extensively for the treatment of depression.

The most common side effects are temporary scalp discomfort or mild headache during or after treatment sessions. Serious side effects are rare.

A full evaluation is performed before treatment to determine whether TMS is appropriate for each patient.

Can I drive myself after TMS treatment?

Yes. Because NeuroStar TMS does not require anesthesia or sedation, most patients are able to drive themselves to and from treatment sessions and return to normal daily activities afterward.

Can I continue taking antidepressant medications during TMS treatment?

In many cases, yes. Patients may continue antidepressant or other psychiatric medications during NeuroStar TMS treatment depending on their individual treatment plan.

Medication management decisions are individualized and reviewed during the evaluation process.

Who is a good candidate for TMS therapy?

TMS may be a good option for patients struggling with depression who:

• Have not improved with medications
• Cannot tolerate medication side effects
• Prefer non-medication treatment options
• Want to explore additional approaches for mental health treatment

A consultation is required to determine whether NeuroStar TMS is appropriate based on medical history, prior treatment response, and individual goals.

How successful is NeuroStar TMS for depression?

any patients experience meaningful improvement in depressive symptoms with NeuroStar TMS therapy, particularly those who have not responded adequately to medications alone.

Individual results vary, and response rates depend on several factors including diagnosis, symptom severity, prior treatment history, and consistency with treatment.

A consultation and evaluation can help determine whether TMS may be an appropriate option for your situation.

Do I need maintenance TMS treatments?

Some patients experience long-lasting improvement after completing an initial course of NeuroStar TMS therapy and may not require additional treatment for an extended period of time. Others may benefit from occasional maintenance treatments if symptoms begin to return.

Research and clinical experience suggest that many patients maintain improvement for months or longer after an initial treatment course, though depression and other mental health conditions can naturally fluctuate over time. There is no universal maintenance schedule, and the need for additional treatment varies from person to person.

At Baker Direct Primary Care in Liberty Lake, maintenance NeuroStar TMS treatments are individualized based on each patient’s symptoms, treatment response, and goals. Some patients may never need maintenance sessions, while others may benefit from periodic booster treatments to help sustain symptom improvement.

When clinically appropriate, we offer flexible maintenance treatment packages for patients throughout the Spokane area and nearby North Idaho communities.
